Pacu Jawi (Cow Race)

Pacu Jawi or means by Cow Race is one of the famous sport event and cultures from Tanah Datar, West Sumatera, Indonesia.

Pacu Jawi is unique cultural event because it is held at the muddy rice fields and is usually carried out according to the harvest season. This event is held in order to harvest more lively and fun and held three times a year before the planting season.

The cows tied to a plow and then a jockey tugging cows tail. In order for a cow can run with racing, the jockeys sometimes have to bite the cattle, the harder the bite of the jockeys eat cow would run faster. There are five to 10 pairs of cows in each race.

Not too difficult to get the Pacu Jawi’s held, from Padang (the capital of West Sumatra province) you just need to go towards the Padang Panjang roughly about two hours traveling using public transportation.

Harau Valley

In West Sumatera many valleys or canyons and lakes are very attractive for tourists. Natural beauty plus the cool air in Bukittinggi region provide soothing shades for visitors.

About 1.5 hours drive from Bukittinggi towards the West, you will find Harau Valley. Or about 15 km from Payakumbuh.

Harau Valley walls long stretches, interspersed with some lovely scenic waterfalls with cliff is almost vertically. Variety shapes and colorful moss because of rain from the top of the cliff. Valley area of 300 hectares is a nature reserve with well preserved. At the bottom of valley spread out the rice fields, the exotic panorama will amaze who saw it.

Along the road to this Valley is a lovely countryside. Steep granite walls shelter the fertile valley.

Harau Valley had two point of tourism object, one called Sarasah Bunta and the other Aka Barayun. At Sarasah Bunta there are five waterfall and at Aka Barayun just one waterfall. The water of waterfall is so cool and fresh, there are also some little fish living on the nature pool of waterfall. A nice tourism object to visit.

In addition to natural tourism, Harau Valley is also used as rock climbing area.
